What Is a CVT Transmission?

A Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) is a type of automatic transmission that allows shifting through an unlimited number of gear ratios, providing a smoother ride. CVTs will enable the car to maintain a constant engine speed (RPMs) at different vehicle speeds. Some modern cars are equipped with CVTs as they typically provide better fuel economy and performance.

The CVT is different from a traditional automatic transmission in that there are typically no fixed gears but two pulleys attached by a belt that can increase or decrease torque when needed. While there are several types of CVTs, the basic concept is to do away with traditional transmissions’ fixed gear ratios.

Advantages and Disadvantages of a CVT

CVTs have some advantages over traditional automatic transmissions. CVTs do not have fixed gear ratios. Therefore the transmission will always be at the peak ratio for the driving conditions. The result is a smoother ride without needing upshifting or downshifting and improved fuel economy. The disadvantage is the driver’s reduced feedback from the engine because the car does not shift gears in the traditional sense. In addition, CVTs are generally not as durable as conventional automatics and are more expensive to repair.

Common Problems With a CVT

CVTs can experience many of the same problems as automatic transmissions in that fluid leaks and overheating are significant causes of issues. In addition, the belts that are used in CVTs are prone to stretching, which will lead to slippage and loss of power.

Remember that the driving experience is different with a CVT than with a traditional automatic; therefore, you may think there is a problem when there isn’t one.
