A Guide to the Different Colors of Auto Fluids

We here at Clark’s Professional Car Care would be happy to stay on top of your automotive fluids for you. We can check them on a regular basis and replace them when they need it. If any of the fluids are low, we can top the fluid off. Your automobile has a variety of fluids in it that help it run inefficiently and safely. We are going to discuss the common automotive fluids below by their color.

Blue

The most common automotive fluid that is blue is your windshield washing solution. There are some engine coolants out there that are blue or blue-green. Other than these two fluids, you won’t find any other blue fluid in your automobile.

Brown

You will find brown fluids in your automobile. As you already know, motor oil is light brown when it is new, and it turns dark brown as it ages. Differential oil is also brown. In most cases, brake fluid is light brown when it is new, and it also turns dark brown as it ages.

Clear

The diesel fuel or gasoline in the tank is clear. It’s important to smell any clear fluid leaking from your automobile to make sure it isn’t fuel. In most cases, it’s water dripping off of the air conditioner or out of the tailpipe. Condensation is normal for vehicles.

Green

The only green fluid you will find in your car, truck, or utility vehicle is antifreeze/coolant. This could be neon green, green-blue, green-yellow, or just green. If your automobile is leaking coolant, don’t drive it. Doing so will overheat the engine.

Orange

Orange is another color in which antifreeze/coolant comes. It may be orange from the get-go, or it may turn or range because the radiator is filled with rust. If the radiator is filled with rust, the bottom of it will corrode and eventually start leaking.

Red

We mentioned above that brake fluid is generally brown. In some cases, your brake fluid may be red depending on the brand you buy. The other red fluids in your automobile are the transmission fluid and the power steering fluid. You might also have red engine coolant.

Yellow

Finally, antifreeze/coolant also comes in neon yellow, yellow-green, or just yellow. If you have new brake fluid in the brake system, it might look yellow or amber.
