Auto Fluids Based on Their Color

It may seem odd to list automotive fluids based on their color. However, the best way to find out what is leaking is to look at the color. You can soak up the fluid by using a paper towel or a white cloth. You can check the fluid’s color and use the handy guide below to determine its identity.

Blue

If the fluid is colored blue, it is likely that the solution is the windshield washer. It also de-ices the windshield during winter. The fluid may also be coolant/antifreeze because the coolant/antifreeze may be blue. Check the radiator to determine the coolant color when the engine is cold.

Brown

Only a few automotive fluids can be made brown. Motor oil is brown. Although you might not know it, the differential oil is brown, too. Your automobile’s brake fluid should be brown in most cases. Brown can also occur when the transmission fluid is dirty.

Clear

Clear fluid is often just water. While the vehicle is being driven, the tailpipe and air conditioner both release condensation. However, you should smell the clear fluid to ensure it doesn’t smell fuel-like. Don’t drive your car if the fluid smells like fuel. A fuel leakage is the cause.

Green

Green is another color that coolant/antifreeze is available in. This is typically neon green. This bright color is hard to miss if it’s visible on your garage floor. Check the radiator and the overflow tank to see if the coolant/antifreeze is green or green-yellow.

Orange

If it has rust in it, the coolant may turn orange. This can happen if the radiator is old. In some cases, the coolant/antifreeze might be orange originally, as this is a common color of coolant/antifreeze.

Red

The coolant/antifreeze also comes in red. You can check the coolant level in your vehicle’s radiator and overflow tank to see if there is a leak. Transmission oil and power steering fluid are also red. In some cases, your brake fluid may also be red.

Yellow

The cooling system may be leaking neon yellow coolant/antifreeze. We recommend that you not drive the car if the coolant/antifreeze is leaking. This will prevent it from overheating.
