Ever had one of those days? Traffic on your way to work was terrible, your day at the office was long and stressful, and the traffic on your way home is somehow worse than it was in the morning. And wouldn’t you know it? You notice that your gas light is activated, indicating that you need to stop and fill up. That is absolutely the last thing you feel like doing, so you decide to drive the rest of the way home and worry about it in the morning. But is that a good idea? Is it bad for your car? Generally speaking, driving on empty isn’t a great idea.
You Could Run Out Of Gas
Drive any gas-powered vehicle without filling up for long enough and eventually, it’s going to stall out. When that happens, you’ve either got a long, humiliating walk to a service station ahead, or a long wait in your car while a tow truck or AAA comes to you. Both options are time-consuming, embarrassing, and possibly costly, and can easily be avoided by simply gassing up your vehicle when necessary.
Your Fuel Pump Will Thank You
Your car’s fuel pump was designed to be submerged in gasoline, so when you drive on an empty tank, it can cause misfires and eventually malfunctions. An auto repair technician will tell you that a fuel pump is a difficult and expensive component to replace, so do yourself a favor and keep at least a quarter of a tank in your car at all times. Even if the gas light doesn’t active, try to keep it at the ¼ level.
Make An Appointment
If you suspect you’ve damaged your fuel pump by chronic driving on empty, or you simply want us to take a look, make an appointment today! In the meantime, though, it doesn’t really matter how bad your day was; you should always make sure that there is gas in your vehicle.
